Bull City Swimming’s beloved original logo was fashioned after a family member’s drawing
Bruce Mitchell and his wife Mikaila, a NICU nurse at UNC, began Bull City Swimming in 2021. The year-round swim team soon followed, taking on its first swimmers in fall 2022. Since its founding, Bull City Swimming has been shaped by Coach Bruce’s love of coaching. He’s been a swim coach in some capacity for over 16 years.
At the core of Bull City Swimming is a desire for every kid to feel respected and celebrated. Coach Bruce considers himself incredibly lucky to be able to help kids develop new skills, overcome fear, and tackle hard problems.
About Bull City Swimming
Coach Bruce’s swim career began at 6 years old when he joined the Parkwood Piranhas, a Durham Summer Swim League team. By the end of the season, he didn’t want the fun to end, and Bruce began swimming year round.
At 14, Bruce volunteered as a junior coach and discovered the only thing more fun than being a swimmer was helping other kids learn to love swimming. He has coached in some capacity every year since.
When Bruce isn’t at the pool, he can be found in his “office” (the garage), at a coffee shop with Mikaila, or cooking and playing music with his kids.
